The Federal Way Blast Off began with a day of intense anticipation. With the butterflies arriving a little earlier than usual, it was only a given that this would prove to be a good weekend for soccer. After arriving at Celebration Park the boys gave it their all in the first preliminary game, but sadly it seemed they’d been frowned upon by the soccer gods, as a few lucky shots beat their dominating game play. Humid air and crisp rain set the stage for the second day’s games. Despite the miserable weather it was time to play soccer. In the Fury’s second game, the team became a showcase of skill and heart, which resulted in a 1-0 win. In the boy’s third game it became clear to them that Mother Nature was defiantly not a soccer mom. Pelted by rain in mid-August the Fury pulled of a 1-1 tie that bought them a ticket to the finals. In the tournament’s conclusive game the first half was nail-biting and scoreless, but victory was close as a Fury free kick found the back of the net and gave them the lead. With 42 seconds left the other team delivered a crippling blow and tied the game. The two ten minute overtime periods gave neither team a goal, so the penalty kicks began. Ten players (5 per team) were chosen to battle against 192 square feet of net and one goal keeper. After every Fury representative scored it was down to the last member of the enemy’s team to kick. These final moments felt like eternity, but the conclusion was clear and it was good. The 96’ Fury were the victors of the Federal Way Blast Off. The 6-5 win brought them the spoils of victory, and the title of Blast-off champions. Well done boys, great work!
